Readers are Leaders!
Reading instruction at Walnut Street School is provided in multiple formats: whole group mini-lessons and core instruction (grade-level content), small group direct instruction based on student levels (may or may not be on grade-level), and independent practice. Teachers use data from pre-tests and unit mid-point assessments to provide strategic instruction targeting specific needs. Within reading instruction, we are addressing word knowledge (vocabulary building), fluency (rate and accuracy of reading), and comprehension (understanding the text). Each of these components are specific and detailed. Students may be very strong in one aspect and not in another. As a result, our instruction digs down to the skill level to support students with specific strategies. As you know, reading is fundamental, and readers are leaders!
