Meet the Principal
Des Moines Public Schools is pleased to announce Tom Bartello will be the next principal of Walnut Street School in Downtown Des Moines.
Bartello brings more than a decade of experience in school administration and teaching to his new role. He most recently served as an associate principal at Hubbell Elementary for three years. His prior experience includes six years as an elementary principal in both the Johnston and Newton community school districts.
“I will miss my Hubbell family but am excited to join Walnut Street School and to become part of a community that also values growth, collaboration, and the unique talents of every student and staff member,” Bartello said. “My goal is to build on the school’s existing strengths while introducing new initiatives that support our vision for student success.”
Bartello’s education background includes an in-progress Doctor of Education in culturally responsive leadership from Drake University in Des Moines, expected to be completed in Summer 2026, a master’s degree in educational leadership from Iowa State University in Ames, and his undergraduate work was completed in elementary education at Northwestern College.
“Tom Bartello’s dedication to student achievement and his innovative approach to educational leadership make him an excellent choice for Walnut Street School,” said Dr. Robert Lundin, Chief Academic Officer of Des Moines Public Schools.
“We are confident that under his guidance, the school will continue to provide outstanding educational opportunities for our students.”
Tom Bartello began his work at Walnut Street School this summer following School Board approval. He takes over for former Walnut Street School principal Amy Laug, who became principal at Brody Middle School earlier this summer.
