Amy Laug is the new principal at the Walnut Street School.

Walnut Street School, one of the district’s ten International Baccalaureate World Schools, is welcoming a new principal. Amy Laug is taking over for Robert Burnett, who has accepted the position of principal at The Downtown School.

Laug is well known at Walnut Street School, having started her career there as a first grade teacher, eventually becoming the International Baccalaureate coordinator and Dean of Students. Laug grew up in Pella, and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education, and holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Iowa.

“Amy Laug has grown with Walnut Street School for almost a decade,” said David Johns, Director of DMPS IB Schools. “Her experience, leadership skills and deep understanding of the IB program make her a natural choice for the position of principal.”

Walnut Street School is one of two schools conveniently located for working families in the heart of Downtown Des Moines and serves children from preschool through 5th grade.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the students, staff and families at Walnut Street School,” Laug said. “The International Baccalaureate philosophy is my passion. I strongly believe Walnut Street will continue to do great things for our district and community.”

Laug’s position is expected to be approved at a school board meeting in August.
